Can I be retaliated against for making a report?
The University prohibits retaliation against any person who participates or is perceived to participate in a protected activity. Further, North Carolina’s Anti-Retaliation Statute (G.S. 95-241) prohibits employers from taking any adverse action against an employee who, in good faith, reports or participates in investigations of suspected legal violations, workplace safety concerns, or other protected activities. Retaliation includes adverse actions, including but not limited to intimidation, threats, or coercion related to an adverse action.
What if I am not sure whether something should be reported?
If you are unsure whether an incident, concern, or behavior should be reported, we encourage you to submit a report. The appropriate University office can help determine whether additional action is needed and connect individuals with available resources.
Can I submit a report on behalf of someone else?
Yes. Reports may be submitted by individuals who have experienced an incident directly, witnessed concerning behavior, or received information that may warrant review.
Can I submit a report anonymously?
Some reporting options allow anonymous reporting, while others may require contact information to facilitate follow-up. Anonymous reports will be reviewed to the extent possible; however, the University's ability to investigate or respond may be limited if additional information is needed.
What happens after I submit a report?
After a report is received, it is reviewed by the appropriate University office. Depending on the nature of the concern, the University may contact the reporting party, assess available information, initiate an investigation, provide supportive resources, or refer the matter to another office for review.
Will my report remain confidential?
The University strives to protect the privacy of all individuals involved in a report to the extent permitted by law. Information is shared only with those who have a legitimate need to know in order to review, investigate, respond to, or resolve the reported concern, and may be disclosed when required by law or necessary to address safety concerns.
What if the situation is an emergency?
If there is an immediate threat to health or safety, a crime in progress, or another emergency situation, call 911 immediately rather than submitting an online report.
Can I report concerns involving students, employees, visitors, or third parties?
Yes. Reports may involve students, faculty, staff, volunteers, contractors, visitors, or other individuals participating in University programs, activities, or operations.
How do I know which reporting option to use?
Review the categories and examples provided on this page and select the option that best matches your concern. If you are unsure, submit a report through the most applicable category, and the University will help route the report to the appropriate office.
